Podcast by Sara Rosenbaum on Medicaid Work Requirements

February 23, 2018

In the weeks that have passed since the Trump administration invited states to begin attaching work requirements to Medicaid, George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health Professor Sara Rosenbaum, JD, a widely respected authority on Medicaid, has provided insights into the major policy shift in influential print media publications and broadcasts on television and radio.

Most recently, Rosenbaum was interviewed on the Healthcare Policy Podcast, which features audio interviews with experts on current or important health care topics.

In the 20-minute podcast, Rosenbaum provides background on the components of section 1115 of the Social Security Act that authorizes the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services to authorize experimental, pilot, and demonstration projects that are intended to assist in promoting the objectives of the Medicaid program.  She discusses the problems with the evidence that the Trump administration amassed to justify the policy change.  The interview goes over details about the waiver that was approved for the state of Kentucky, the first of a growing number of states that have sought waiver approval.  Rosenbaum also discusses the legal basis for litigation that challenges the Kentucky waiver that, along with Indiana, represents the two demonstrations given the green light to proceed.
